Dr. Danworth is currently the Medical Director of Project BEST which is a SAMHSA funded project to expand opioid agonist therapy with buprenorphine for HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected but at risk drug users. In addition, Dr. Danworth provides primary HIV care on the Community Health Care Van Project (a risk reduction mobile medical clinic)…

The thrust of Dr. Danworth’s talk was that service opportunities are all around us (especially in University Town), that we must seek out service opportunities each day rather than “some day”, and that we must stand up for our beliefs. Regarding the last point, he discussed his recent testimony against creating a methadone program in this state (e.g. for heroin addicts) because of the for-profit nature of said program. Other salient points included University Eric Flint’s impressive first novel, Mother of Demons (Baen), was selected by SF Chronicle as one of the best novels of 1997. With David Drake he has written six popular novels in the Belisarius series, including the new novel The Dance of Time, and with David Weber collaborated on 1633, If her celebrity cohorts get easy sentences and then get off early, why is Paris getting the hard line? I would estimate that it’s because middle-Americans sometimes get sick of the rich and powerful getting special treatment; Hilton is probably the highest profile of those, and one who is so famous for society

the least actual reason. But in the end, is it her fault her humanity is so warped that she can’t psychologically handle the consequences of her actions? And could it be that she just didn’t know any better, and certainly didn’t expect to land as the symbol of a cultural battle between celebrity worship and resentment? I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve what she’s getting, but I do think to some degree it’s pitiful that a person could grow up to be so weak. It’s also interesting that this case exposed a strange dichotomy in our society, and one that might start to be shifting back toward the resentment end.
a novel in the Ring of Fire series, and on Crown of Slaves, a best of the year pick by Publishers Weekly. Flint received his masters degree in history from UCLA and was for many years a labor union activist. He lives in East Chicago, IL, with his wife and is working on more books in the best-selling Ring ofFire series.”
Town’s status as one of the ten poorest cities in the country (which appears completely false based on my own research), his absolute distaste for “for-profit” medicine (both big pharma and for-profit hospitals), and the suspicion with which we will be greeted within University Town as Ivy Med students. He said that simply by being associated with Ivy, we will be “as wealthy as Ivy”.

I loved Dr. Danworth’s message and I liked him personally as well. However, I do wish he would have been less strident in his presentation. For example, he discussed at conspiracy plot by city officials to drive out drug dealers by placing a school in every neighborhood (drug dealers are dealt with very harshly if found within 1500 feet of a school). Furthermore, he delivered his message with too much condescension for my taste, at one point advising us that if we did not understand the word “draconian”, we could look it up when we got home.
